Diu Fort

Portuguese fort built in 1535 — one of the oldest and most intact colonial forts on India's west coast. Massive, dramatic, and largely unvisited.

Scale & setting — the fort sits on a promontory with the sea on three sides. The walls are massive — comparable to any fort in Rajasthan but almost empty of visitors. You can walk the full perimeter.

Church of St. Thomas inside — a Portuguese chapel inside the fort itself, now a museum of colonial stonework. Quiet and atmospheric.

Sea views — from the cannon bastions, views of the Arabian Sea in three directions. The light at 4–5 PM is exceptional for photographs.

Free entry — one of the few forts of this scale in India with no entry fee. No crowds, no queues.

Veraval Port ⭐

7 km from Somnath — India’s largest fishing port. Trawlers returning with the catch, fish being sorted on the dock, the smell of salt and sea. Completely unscripted and local. The contrast with the temple atmosphere is vivid and memorable. One of those stops that feels like finding Saurashtra behind the pilgrimage circuit. 45 minutes is enough.

Portuguese fort built in 1535 — one of the oldest and most intact colonial fortifications on India’s west coast. The scale is enormous. Walk the full perimeter walls, see the cannons, explore the Church of St. Thomas inside (now a museum). The fort at 4–5 PM with the sea light is extraordinary.

5 km from Diu town. A palm-lined, calm, clean beach — one of the most memorable sunsets of the entire 7-day circuit. Coastal decompression at its finest. Stay for at least 30–45 minutes after sunset when the light goes soft pink. Dinner on the beach or in Diu town.

12 km from Sasan Gir — an enclosed zone within Gir with near-guaranteed Asiatic lion sightings. Available as a shared bus or Open Gypsy. Ticketed at the gate, no advance booking needed. This is your first lion encounter — Devalia’s enclosed setting almost guarantees a sighting. Tomorrow’s main zone safari is the wild, unpredictable experience in contrast. Devalia is closed every Wednesday — confirm your Day 3 doesn’t fall on a Wednesday.

3-hour jeep safari through Gir National Park’s core zone. ~700 Asiatic lions in the park. Unlike Devalia, sightings here are not guaranteed — but most morning safaris do encounter lions. Also watch for leopards in the trees, spotted hyenas, chital deer, and marsh crocodiles. The combination of yesterday’s certain Devalia sighting and today’s wild forest experience is the complete picture of Gir.

Go early — the queue builds significantly after 9 AM. Full trek alternative: 9,999 steps one way, 3–5 hours up. Avoid the full trek during monsoon.

Temple Rules

No phones inside Somnath or Dwarkadhish — free lockers at both entrances. Modest covering clothing at both temples. For Gir safari, wear dull colours — no bright red, orange, or white. Photography prohibited inside Dwarkadhish temple.

Gir Safari — Book First

Book your main zone permit at girlion.gujarat.gov.in before planning dates — 2–4 weeks ahead in peak season. Safari season: Oct 16 – Jun 15. Devalia needs no advance booking but is closed every Wednesday. Confirm Day 4 date isn't a Wednesday.

Diu: Union Territory

Diu is a Union Territory — not part of Gujarat state. Non-veg food and seafood are freely available. The Portuguese colonial history means the architecture, street layout, and pace feel genuinely different from anything else on the circuit.

Transport

A self-drive or hired cab for the full circuit is essential — no direct trains connect all 5 stops. Total driving is ~600 km across 7 days. Plan your final day train or flight for late afternoon or evening out of Jamnagar or Rajkot.
