Best Time to Visit Somnath

Quick Travel Tip

Avoid visiting Somnath during peak summer months (May to mid-June), especially if you are travelling with senior citizens or young children. The winter months from October to February are generally more comfortable for temple darshan as well as sightseeing around Somnath.

People often ask us about when to visit Somnath Temple — especially guests planning their first trip for darshan. Based on our experience assisting visitors travelling to Somnath for temple darshan and nearby sightseeing, the ideal time to visit often depends on the kind of experience one is looking for.

Some visitors prefer the spiritual atmosphere during festive occasions, while others choose a quieter period for a peaceful temple visit and comfortable sightseeing of nearby places. Travel comfort may also vary depending on factors such as age, weather conditions and expected crowd levels.

Is There a Specific “Best Season” to Visit Somnath?

Unlike hill stations or seasonal tourist destinations, Somnath does not really have a fixed travel season. Somnath Temple remains open for darshan throughout the year and can be visited in most months comfortably. However, the overall experience may vary depending on weather conditions, crowd levels, religious festivals, school holidays, weekend footfall.

From what I have observed while assisting guests visiting Somnath, only the peak summer months — particularly May and early June — are generally not advisable due to high daytime temperatures. Apart from that, Somnath can be visited comfortably during most parts of the year.

Visiting Somnath in Winter

(October to February)

Winter is usually considered  the most comfortable time to visit Somnath, visitors may notice a higher number of devotees during weekends and holiday. During these months:

  • The weather remains pleasant during the day, walking within the temple complex is more manageable and local sightseeing becomes easier.
  • This period is particularly suitable for senior citizens and families travelling with children
  • Visitors planning to explore nearby places like Triveni Sangam, Bhalka Tirth, Dehotsarg and Other places should also consider winter as the ideal time to visit somnath.

Visiting Somnath in Summer

(March to June)

Travel during March and early April is usually manageable. However, from late April onwards — especially in May and early June — the daytime heat in Somnath can become quite intense. (38 °C – 48 °C)

This may:

  • Make walking around the temple premises uncomfortable
  • Affect senior citizens and children
  • Limit sightseeing during afternoon hours

On the positive side, crowd levels during these months are often lower, which may result in relatively quicker darshan.

Visiting Somnath in Monsoon

(July to September)

Monsoon is often an underrated time to visit Somnath.

During this period:

  • Crowd levels are comparatively lower, temple premises are quieter
  • Accommodation rates may be more economical
  • Devotees who prefer a peaceful darshan without much waiting time often choose to visit during these months.
  • Occasional rainfall may affect local travel plans, but temple darshan continues as usual.

Festival Season

(When to Expect Rush)

Somnath experiences a significant increase in devotee footfall during certain religious occasions such as month of Shravan (Saawan) and Maha Shivratri. during such occasions

  • Visitors may experience higher waiting time (45-60 Min.) for darshan during these peak periods.
  • Those who prefer a more relaxed visit may consider planning their trip outside these major festival dates.
  • Accommodation cost and availability may also be point of concern, advance booking is generally recommended

Final Recommendation

Somnath Temple can be visited throughout the year for darshan. However, travellers looking for a comfortable and relaxed visit may prefer avoiding the peak summer months and major religious occasions if they wish to minimise waiting time.

Based on assistance provided to guests visiting Somnath for temple darshan, weekdays during the winter or post-monsoon period often provide a more balanced experience in terms of weather and crowd levels.
