One of Gujarat’s most layered cities — Girnar’s sacred hills, a 2,300-year-old fort.
Home -> Junagadh Travel Guide
Junagadh is one of Gujarat’s most historically rich cities — a place where Buddhist caves, Jain temples, Hindu shrines, medieval forts and Indo-Gothic mausoleums coexist across centuries of layered history.
The city sits at the foot of the Girnar hills — the sacred mountain with 9,999 steps leading to a cluster of Jain and Hindu temples at the summit. The Girnar Ropeway now covers the 2.3 km ascent in just 7 minutes, making the summit accessible to all visitors.
Junagadh was also the birthplace of Narsinh Mehta — Gujarat’s greatest poet-saint and author of the beloved bhajan Vaishnav Jan To. The city’s old bazaars, its famous Junagadhi penda (milk sweet), and its warm Kathiyawadi hospitality make it deeply rewarding.
7:30 AM to 7:00 PM daily. Last ropeway up at 6:30 PM. Closed on maintenance days — check locally.
Approximately ₹700–900 per person for return journey. Tickets available at the ropeway base station.

Diu is 90 km from Somnath and 370 km from Ahmedabad. Diu airport has connections to Mumbai. Buses from Somnath daily.
